The One String Of Lights That Does Not Look Cheap

Most garden string lights give themselves away instantly — hard blue-white LEDs on a thin wire. These do the opposite: fat crackle-glass globes with a warm filament-style glow, spaced along a proper cable, so lit they read as festoon lighting outside a bar rather than as a novelty.

The whole run is solar. A small panel on a spike goes into a border or screws to a wall, and the string comes on at dusk without a plug, an extension lead or a socket anywhere near the garden.

Zigzag Them, Do Not Fence Them

The mistake is running lights around the edge of a garden like a boundary. Take them diagonally across a patio, between a house wall and a tree, or in two parallel swags above a table, and you get a lit ceiling to sit under instead of a lit perimeter.

Four Lengths

Five metres for a small patio or a balcony, 6.5 or 7 metres for a table or a pergola side, and 12 metres for a full garden run or a couple of swags. Bear in mind the panel needs to reach a sunny spot at one end.

Fat Globes, Not Thin Wire

Most garden string lights give themselves away with hard blue-white LEDs on a thin wire. Crackle-glass balls with a warm filament glow read as festoon lighting outside a bar, which is the look people are actually after.

String lights over an outdoor dining table

Hang Them Across, Not Around

Running lights around the edge of a garden gives you a lit perimeter. Taking them diagonally across a patio, or in two swags above a table, gives you a lit ceiling to sit under. It is the same string of lights and a completely different room.

Solar panel spike that powers the string

No Socket Required

A small panel on a spike goes into a border or screws to a wall, and the whole run comes on at dusk. No plug, no extension lead trailing out of a window, and nothing to switch off at midnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which length should I choose?

Five metres suits a balcony or a small patio, 6.5 to 7 metres covers a dining table or one side of a pergola, and 12 metres does a full garden run or a pair of swags. Measure the span and add a little for droop.

Where does the solar panel go?

On a spike into a border, or screwed to a wall or fence, at one end of the run. It needs a few hours of open sky, so plan the sunny end of the string before you start hanging it.

Are they safe to leave out in the rain?

They are waterproof and designed to live outdoors through the season. If they are in a very exposed spot, taking them down during winter storms will extend their life considerably.

Do they switch on by themselves?

Yes, at dusk, via a sensor on the panel. Give them a full day of charge before the first evening and they will run through the best part of an evening in summer.

Can I join two strings together?

Each string has its own panel rather than a connector, so they are not designed to be joined end to end. For a long run, use the 12 metre version or hang two strings from a shared fixing point.
